Dealing with Death

Amelia seems so young to be dealing with death. But that's life... right? 2 weeks ago a high school student passed away. She did not know him, but his mom is a teacher at her school and he was a day care worker there for other kindergarten kids. So... she was exposed to death, yet again. It brings up great conversations. Hard conversations.

Her teacher sent home a card for the kids to fill out and return to school for his mom, the teacher. This is what she wrote. All on her own, with some minor spelling help from me. And then, she told she was going to tape one of her quarters to the card. Because "that's what you do when people pass away." Ahhh, where does this come from? How does she know so much about pain and death. She's SIX.

Then as Easter approached I realized that we have been talking about death for a long time. The death of Jesus. And His death is very real to her. I remember Easter when she was 4. She asked me when they gave Jesus His crown. "You know, because He's a king." So I explained that the only earthly crown he ever received was one of thorns pounded on His head as a punishment. She was angry about this, "He should have been given a crown, He's a king!"

Things in this life do not go as we expect them too. 17 year old boys passing away, Jesus being killed instead of crowned, and on and on. But one thing I do know for sure. God is EVERYWHERE and He loves you and He loves me. And for today, that's enough.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4
